[Monthly Challenges] Announcing . . . ARO ACE APRIL! (Graphic Update!)

*throws confetti into the air*

As I mentioned in my wrap-up post for #fffebruaryreads here, Imi and I have decided to host another monthly challenge – this time, Aro Ace April. I’ve been considering it for a little while, but when my friend Kelsea also suggested I do it, I knew it was something that should happen. The presentation of aromantic, asexual and a-spec characters within literature is something very important to me personally, which is another reason why I really wanted to host this challenge and put it out there.

Aromantic, asexual and all a-spec characters are possibly the least represented LGBTQ+ individuals within literature – but it doesn’t mean there aren’t books out there. In fact, if you look right, there are a ton of really amazing ones. Which is exactly what #aroaceapril is all about. Bringing these books to the forefront by talking about them, posting about them, and reading them. It’ll have the same kind of loose layout as #fffebruaryreads wherein a lot is down to you, the reader. You can choose what you read, when you want to read it, and how many books featuring aro/ace/a-spec characters you wish to read. You can read one book, or you can read ten. (You could even read none but still post photos of books featuring aro/ace characters in the photo challenge.)

We have fun little challenges for you all again – a small Instagram photo challenge with prompts, and then a bingo board that also corresponds. You can find those down below. On Instagram, every post tagged with #aroaceapril will get you entered into a giveaway for a book featuring an aro/ace spec character, as will any usage of it on Twitter. Completing the bingo board is an extra entry!

*small little tip: for the photo challenge on the 21st which entails an a-spec recommendation from a friend . . . technically all the books on the masterlist count as we are rec’ing them to you  😉

A list of books to read will be up tomorrow, Wednesday 27th (I know this is so late when it comes to planning but we’ve had a lot on our plate, sorry). There are loads of really good ones – including mainstream releases I know are on many TBRs, so some of you have no excuses *cough* like those people who haven’t read Vengeful yet *cough cough*

(If you really want to start prepping early, though, let me suggest some of these mainstream books featuring a-spec characters: Radio Silence by Alice Oseman; Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman; Once & Future by Cori McCarthy & Amy Rose Capetta; The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy by Mackenzi Lee; Vicious by VE Schwab and many more that will be on the upcoming list . . . )

At the end of the day, we hope this challenge brings a little more awareness to books featuring a-spec characters, as well as helping others who might not know as much about what it means to be on the spectrum to learn a little more.

Also happening this month is the readathon A-spec April, which you can find more info about here. They’ll be hosting a readathon between April 1-7th and 8-14th, so we really encourage participating with them too if you have an interest ❤

      1. I would love to read more books with ace rep, and I wish that they were more explicitly known. Like, before reading your post, I had no idea there was a character in Vicious that was ace, but now that I know, I moved it up on my TBR.
